OldSlabHolders Newsletter

Updates from 2024 and more.
January 30 2025
Hey all, wow, 2024 flew by fast! It was a busy year for me. I got a lot of projects done around the house and managed a complete redesign of oldslabholders.com. The redesign included the addition of a page of census records. Now we have a centralized “portal” to link to the holder censuses from PCGS, NGC, ANACS and CAC. I felt it would be another useful tool on site. I know many of you have already enjoyed digging through the data!
In this first & brief newsletter I wanted to touch on a couple of things, but first, I want to say thank you. To all of you who have emailed me and told me how useful the site has been for you, I appreciate it! Knowing that I’m not the only one finding use of my obsessive compilation of data makes all of the work worth it! Finally I want to send a big thanks to those who have seen fit to make a donation or a purchase from me, it is very much appreciated!

When CAC introduced their new grading company in 2023, I hadn’t expected any changes of note. Wow, was I wrong. To date, there have been three distinct revisions to their standard label. Along with those, there are numerous minor variations within some of those generations. Included is the rare early “Reg” problem label. You can visit the CAC generations page and access a downloadable detailed presentation showing all the known changes and varieties or click here CAC-SLAB-GENERATIONS
HOLDER “NEWS”

In the world of scarce and rare slabs, there are still some that can be found at little to no premium. We all know that PCGS’s gen 1.0 & 1.1, as well as NGC’s 1.0, 2.0 & 2.1 are very tough to find without a huge premium. There are still some tougher holders from NGC & PCGS that can be found with little to no premium as well. However, ANACS has equally rare holders that can still be had at bargain prices. Here are a couple.

CAC Revises Label
Collecting "Bargain" Priced Rare Slabs
ANACS Generation 7.0
These were likely produced around Feb or March of 2006. Based on years of data collection & sifting through 100,000’s of auction listings, I would approximate the number of holders produced at less than 1000. Likely production of this label was a day or a few. While this holder only comes up a handful of times a year, it can be most often found with little or no premium as it is still unknown to most people. They often come up in mini “hoards” as collections that have been off the market for years come up for sale. For more details, visit my ANACS page here. Current census figures put the number of survivors known at 71.
ANACS Generation P6.5
These were produced alongside gen 7.0. At this time ANACS holdered problem coins in their “old” small white holders. The gen P6.5 is distinguished from all other problem labels as it has 3 rows of “pyramids” on the background of the front label. All following problem generations have 2 rows. Based on my research, I approximate the number of holders produced was less than 600. For more details, visit my ANACS problem holder history here. Current census figures put the number of survivors known at 34, nearly half (15) of those came up in a mini “hoard” in 2019.

NGC Generation 10
Produced July 2003 - Aug 2003 for about 2 months. This holder features a revised front label with NGC's website & logo replacing the company name along the bottom of the border. The grade is now in bold and it also has a different background design from the previous holder. The back side of the holder features a revised hologram with ANA's lamp logo. I have no information as to why this design was so quickly discontinued. This holder has yet to gain the attention of collectors so you will find them with no premium. I believe it to be another sleeper scarce old holder.

Looking Ahead
As 2025 flies by, I hope to find the time to add more data to the site. You can help with that. If you find a coin missing from any census, please let me know. If you spot a new generation or variety of any holder, please let me know that as well. If you have any holder questions or suggestions on site resources, feel free to email me those as well.
My plan going forward for newsletters will be a yearly update like this one. If any big news comes out during the year that I feel is important, I may send out a short note. In the meantime, enjoy the site, spread the word and happy collecting.
Thanks again and have a great 2025!
John
