PCGS Gen 2.1 Varieties

This short post will cover the scarce short lived PCGS gen 2.1, it's three known varieties and it's updated status.

The following are the three varieties of gen 2.1. Originally recognized as two varieties, gen 2.1A, which was lacking PCGS printed at the top of front label and gen 2.1B which had PCGS at top of label. Recently I came to believe that the actual production order was gen 2.1B first then gen 2.1A. It appears that gen 2.1B only came with wide perforations on label edges and that with PCGS on top of label, it matches the gen 2.0 Doily label style. Some gen 2.1A holders came with wide perforations but most have fine perforation edges, so I have to assume 2.1A was produced after 2.1B. Thanks to Brian for bringing those distinctions to my attention and causing me to revise thinking on the production order. That has all led me to break gen 2.1A into two varieties, gen 2.1A Type 1 (wide perforations) and gen 2.1A Type 2 (fine perforations). All Three shown below for comparison.

After years of observation and documentation, my best estimate is that the overall population of gen 2.1B to 2.1A is approximately 1 to 5 respectively

Gen 2.1B

Gen 2.1A Type 1

Gen 2.1A Type 2

Gen 2.1A Type 2 is distinguished by the fine perforations on the label edges. Based on observation and documentation, my best estimate is that the overall population of gen 2.1A Type 2 to 2.1A Type 1 is approximately 10 to 1 respectively.

Any population estimate changes as I continue to monitor these holders will be updated in the future
